Connie Fisher Triumphs in "The Sound of Music"

November 16, 2006 · 3 Comments

How do you solve a problem like Maria? You put on a TV show, give John Barrowman a chance to kiss a horde of girls, pick the best one – and you get Maria Rainer in the body of 23-year-old Connie Fisher.

Connie wasn’t a total novice, mind you, before embarking on this classic role in “The Sound Of Music”. She went to Mountview Academy of Theatre arts, got an award for acting at her graduation in 2005, appeared in plays like “Annie Get Your Gun” and “Carousel” whilst training and in “Pendragon” and “Aladdin” post-graduation.

As any good live performer, she’s also an experienced dancer and singer – both which comes in handy when you try charming a Von Trapp.

What Do The Critics Think?

“I left with a spring in my step and a soppy smile on my face. Suddenly the world seemed a brighter place”
- The Telegraph

“Whatever one thinks of the process of casting a lead role through a TV elimination game, the truth is that Connie Fisher (“the people’s Maria”) occupies the Palladium stage with absolute confidence and winning charm”
- The Guardian

“[Connie Fisher is] enchantingly fresh and ardent and she sings with a voice that can range from piping purity to soft tenderness”
- The Independent

“She’s as natural and unsugared and wholesome as one of those pots of vegan yoghurt. Just listening to her makes you feel healthy”
- Daily Mail

“Connie Fisher overcame a nervy start to give a fine singing, and even acting, performance as the nun-turned-governess and governess-turned-wife, Maria”
- The Times

Connie was my favourite to win from the start of watching the Maria programme. She was so natural and at ease performing and she just seemed perfect to play Maria. I haven’t seen her in The Sound Of Music yet, but would love to. Not sure how much time I have left before her run finishes.

As for the hordes of women kissing John Barrowman, well who wouldn’t want to – that man is gorgeous!!! I’ve actually met him a few times, and kissed him too, although unfortunately that was only a peck on the cheek. But still, good enough for me! Lol. John is wonderful and such a great entertainer. He’s truly adorable, as his his lovely partner Scott. :)
